Dr. Adrian Chan ( He/Him )

EDI Champion and Computer Engineering Professor at Carleton University

Dr. Adrian D.C. Chan is a Professor in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University, where he also serves as Director of the Collaborative Specialization in Accessibility and the Abilities Living Laboratory (ALL). He holds additional roles as Adjunct Professor in the School of Human Kinetics at the University of Ottawa and Affiliate Investigator at Bruyère Research Institute. A biomedical engineering researcher, Dr. Chan specializes in biomedical signal and image processing, machine learning, non-invasive sensor systems, assistive devices, and accessibility technologies.

His expertise strengthens EDIT-STEM by ensuring interactive learning tools incorporate universal design principles for diverse abilities and needs. Dr. Chan’s leadership in equity, diversity, and inclusion—as Co-Chair of Carleton’s Coordinated Accessibility Strategy, Healthy Workplace Committee, and Faculty of Engineering and Design EDI Council—guides the project toward truly inclusive STEM education. His contributions include award-winning work in accessibility innovation, recognized with honours like the CMBES Outstanding Biomedical Engineer of the Year and 3M National Teaching Fellowship.

As a Registered Professional Engineer, Senior IEEE Member, and Fellow of the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society, Dr. Chan bridges advanced technology with practical application, developing systems that empower all learners through accessible, equitable design.
