Emilia Hyatt
Graduate Student in Human-Computer Interaction at Carleton University
Emilia Hyatt is a Human-Computer Interaction researcher and media producer who specializes at the intersection of embodied technology, scientific storytelling and user experience design. She comes from a background in Media Production and is currently pursuing her Masters in Human-Computer Interaction at Carleton University. Emilia’s background in media production has deep roots in STEM communication. She has produced educational docuseries and outreach media covering complex scientific topics such as medical physics and astronomical events. She translates intricate technical concepts into engaging and accessible narratives for the public audience. She has also worked within the academic HCI space through her Bachelors, exploring embodied tangible user interfaces and extended reality through designing, prototyping, and facilitating participant user studies and sensory interaction design. She combines her empirical methods with creative media in her academic works.
As part of the EDIT-STEM research team, Emilia contributes by bringing a combination of creative media production and user-centered Human-Computer Interaction methodologies to the project. She focuses on translating EDI frameworks into accessible multimedia content aimed at educating workplaces and educational institutions on inclusive STEM practices. Leveraging her experience in prototype design and participant user testing, Emilia supports the iterative development and evaluation of interactive systems to ensure STEM tools are intuitive, engaging and universally accessible.
Beyond media creation, Emilia applies rigorous academic research methodologies to the project. Utilizing qualitative and quantitative user research frameworks, such as including empirical study design, participant facilitation, and data synthesis, Emilia investigates how human-centered interaction models lower technical barriers, generating evidence-based insights to support equitable environment and inclusive workplace pratices.
