Physics and Atmospheric Science Professor at Dalhousie University

Dr. Kevin Hewitt is a full Professor in the Department of Physics & Atmospheric Science at Dalhousie University, inaugural Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion for the Faculty of Science, and NSERC Atlantic-region co-chair for Inclusion in Science & Engineering. In his Bionanophotonics lab, he develops novel nanoparticle probes for bioimaging and treatment, advanced optical imaging techniques combining holography and Raman spectroscopy, and prototype medical diagnostic tools for applications like liver transplantation and uterine fibroids.

Dr. Hewitt bridges cutting-edge science with community impact through his co-founding of Imhotep’s Legacy Academy (2003), an award-winning STEM outreach program for Black students from junior high through university, and the Canadian Black Scientists Network Youth science fair (2021). His commitment to inclusive STEM education directly supports EDIT-STEM’s mission by creating pathways for underrepresented learners to engage with advanced technologies. With national recognition for science promotion (NSERC Award, 2021) and equity leadership, Dr. Hewitt advances research that is both technically innovative and broadly accessible.
