The Coop Program
Application Requirements
Students can apply to co-op in one of two ways;
- directly from high school
2. after beginning a degree program at Carleton
If a student is admitted to co-op from high school, their grades will be reviewed two terms to one year prior to their first work term to ensure they continue to meet the academic requirements after their 1st or 2nd year of study. The time at which evaluation takes place depends on the program of study. Students will automatically be notified via their Carleton email account if they are permitted to continue.
Co-op Admission and Continuation Requirements for Students in the Bachelor of Science
For admission to and continuation in the co-op option, all students must:
- Maintain full-time status in each study term (2.0 credits);
- Be eligible to work in Canada (for off-campus work)
- Have successfully completed COOP 1000
Program-Specific Admission and Continuation Requirements:
Applied Physics, Biochemistry (including computational), Bioinformatics, Biology (including computational), Biotechnology, Chemistry (including computational), Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Neuroscience, and Physics:
- Completion of 5.0 or more credits at Carleton University;
- Registered as a full-time student in the Bachelor of Science Honours degree program;
- Obtained and maintained a major CGPA of 8.0 or higher and an overall CGPA of 6.50 or higher
These requirements establish eligibility to enter the program. However, enrollment in the Co-op Option is limited and depends on the prevailing job market. Application for admission to the Co-op Option is through the Co-op Office web-site (http://carleton.ca/co-op/) and should be submitted before November 1, March 1, or July 1, for May, September, or January work terms respectively.
Work-Study Sequence
There are three four-month work terms. Students will register consecutively in Co-operative Work term reports 1, 2, and 3. (ENSC 3999)
Timing of these employment terms is flexible.

Graduation
Students successfully completing both the 20.0 credits for the Environmental Science Honours program, and the three work-term Co-op courses will receive a Co-operative degree designation in addition to the Honours B.Sc. designation.
Practicum (ENSC 4001)
Another off-campus work option in the Environmental Science program is the Practicum. This option carries a half-course credit towards the degree and consists of unpaid work experience in an external agency setting dealing with environmental issues. The Practicum is available to all students in any of the Environmental Science programs, and is available in all three (Fall, Winter, or Summer) terms.
