Carleton University is celebrating the success of its researchers, who have secured nearly $2.8 million in funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to advance impactful research in the social sciences and humanities. This latest funding will support a total of 25 research projects led by Carleton scholars. Among the grant recipients of are two distinguished colleagues and researchers from the Feminist Institute of Social Transformation.
Dr. Manjeet Birk, an expert in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), received an Insight Grant for her project, “EDI or Bust: Are equity, diversity, and inclusion policies working at post-secondary institutions in Ottawa, Ontario?” Her research will critically examine the effectiveness of EDI policies in higher education institutions, exploring how these initiatives shape the experiences of marginalized groups and whether they are fostering meaningful institutional change.
Dr. Ryan Conrad, another esteemed faculty member, also secured an Insight Development Grant for his project, “Sex Worker Self-Authoring in the Canadian Women’s Movement Archive.” Dr. Conrad’s work will explore the narratives and self-representation of sex workers in the historical context of the Canadian women’s movement, drawing on archival materials to provide new insights into the role of sex workers in feminist activism and their contributions to social justice movements.
“These grants underscore the commitment of Carleton University to driving impactful research that addresses complex social challenges,” said Carleton’s Vice-President (Research and International), Rafik Goubran. “The support from SSHRC enables our researchers to pursue projects that make a difference in communities both locally and globally.”
