Feminist Futures in A Time of Pandemic: Collective Care, Self Care, Radical Care

December 3, 2020 at 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM

Location:Zoom
Cost:Free

Join us at the Institute of Women’s and Gender Studies on Thursday Dec 3, 1-2 pm, for another in the series of informal discussions that have been part of our programming this fall.  As we close out the term, I’d like to return to concepts of collective care that have been an ongoing thread in our discussions.  In addition to exploring distinctions between self care and collective care on a more theoretical level, we might also want to share our own strategies for survival and for care of ourselves and others during this time of pandemic.

Although no reading is required, you might want to look at the special issue of Social Text on “Radical Care,” co-edited by Hi‘ilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart and Tamara Kneese.   The introduction is available here:

And you might also want to ponder the oft-cited words of Audre Lorde from “A Burst of Light”:

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence. It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.”

We hope to “see” you next week or at one of our future events as we do what we can to stay connected in this time of pandemic.
