Cara Tierney

Cara Tierney (pronoun they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist, activist, curator, educator, consultant and community builder. They move between university classrooms, art galleries, cultural institutions, and general publics, producing creative educational encounters aimed at stimulating wider discussions on non-normative modes of embodiment, the collective and relational experience of co-producing identities, while fostering sensitive awareness of the relational construction of historically grounded systems of inequity.

Tierney is the 2019 Artist in Residence in the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine, they teach History and Theory of Art, and Relational Sculpture in the University of Ottawa’s Visual Arts department and are a PhD candidate in Cultural Mediations at Carleton University’s Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Arts and Culture. While a regular artistic producer, university instructor and cultural consultant, their current academic scholarship focuses on the autodidactic pedagogical possibilities for gender self-determination inherent in creative practices.  Their work will be featured in the Ottawa Art Gallery’s (OAG) fall exhibition, Facing Claude Cahun & Marcel Moore, and they are currently working on a major sculptural commission to be installed in October in the main OAG space for 2019-2021.
