Carleton University Research Opportunity (CUROP)

As part of the Carleton University Research Opportunity Program (CUROP), the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs is hosting summer undergraduate research internships. Under supervision of a faculty member, each student participant will design their own research project and complete it over the summer.

Students will receive a stipend of $10,000 (this sum includes 4% vacation pay and statutory holidays) over the course of the summer. The expectation is that the research project undertaken will constitute a full-time commitment for 16 weeks from May to August, 2024.

Eligibility

  • Must have an overall GPA of 9.0;
  • Be at least second year standing in their undergraduate program; and
  • Be taking a major in the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs (Note: If students have two majors, one of the two must be in the Faculty of Public and Global Affairs. Students are only eligible for CUROP funding in one Faculty and cannot hold separate CUROP-funded positions in different faculties.).

Students who will be graduating in June 2024 are eligible for this program.

Students who have received a previous CUROP award are not eligible.

Applications

Summer 2025 Applications are due on February 28, 2025 by 11:59 p.m. (EST).
Please complete the web application form below.

Applications must include:

  • A two-page double-spaced research project description that clearly identifies the project and briefly sketches out a methodology (how will you do it), and the expected output. That is, by the end of the summer, what what you intend to do your research? You should also outline what skills you anticipate developing and what you expect to learn by doing this project.
  • Your resumé.
  • Your transcript (unofficial is acceptable).

Students are responsible for finding a faculty member who will agree to supervise their project. Applicants must arrange for the faculty member to email a letter of support directly to the Dean’s Office (odfpa@cunet.carleton.ca) in advance of the deadline.

Application acceptance times will vary based on committee approvals.

The 2023 CUROP showcase in Richcraft Hall featured the work of three undergraduate researchers who worked with faculty members over the summer:

Economics student Abigail Meloche presented her research on “Dispositioned for Financial Success.”

Global and International Studies student Calum McPhee shared his findings on “Identify, Attack, Disrupt: Understanding Non-State Actors in Russian Intelligence Operations in Europe.”

European, Russian and Eurasian student Gabriella Pickton presented on “The Lost Boys of Eurasia’s Borderlands: Analysis of the International Obligation in Burden-Sharing Surrounding the Russian Military-Aged Male Migrant Crisis.”
