Ian Mendes is a distinguished Canadian sports journalist and communications professional with a career spanning over two decades. In July 2024, he was appointed as the Vice President of Communications for the Ottawa Senators, marking a return to the organization where he previously served as Manager of Communications from 2000 to 2002.
Before rejoining the Senators, Mendes built an impressive media career covering the team for various outlets, including Rogers Sportsnet, TSN 1200, and The Athletic. His tenure at The Athletic showcased his in-depth analysis and storytelling abilities, solidifying his reputation as a leading voice in sports journalism.
Mendes is an alumnus of Carleton University’s esteemed journalism program, graduating in 1998 and is currently an Instructor in Carleton’s Sports Journalism course. His early career included a role as a public relations assistant with the Ottawa Lynx, the city’s former AAA baseball team, and later as Manager of Communications for the Ottawa Senators. Transitioning to media, he spent 12 years with Rogers Sportsnet as a television reporter, covering major events such as the World Series, NHL Stanley Cup Finals, and the Olympic Games.
Beyond his professional achievements, Mendes is dedicated to mentoring aspiring journalists and contributing to the Ottawa community. His return to the Senators reflects his commitment to enhancing the organization’s communication strategies and engaging with fans through compelling storytelling.
