Indigenous Futures: Advancing Data Sovereignty in Biomedical Research
Abstract:
The history of biomedical research in First Nations communities has been fraught with exploitation, failed promises, and a lack of consent for secondary use of biospecimens. To break this cycle of over-researching and under-serving, First Nations are actively reclaiming and asserting self-determination over health data and biological research. This presentation will introduce the concept of Indigenous data sovereignty and outline current priorities for research, policy, and training grounded in a First Nations perspective. These include initiatives to support the long-term repatriation of biological samples that will improve accessibility for First Nations to participate in, and benefit from, biomedical research.
