There are several different summer research opportunities for Health Sciences undergraduate students that are meant to stimulate your interest in health-related research. Some of these include the Black and Indigenous Summer Research Internship (BISRI), Dean Summer Research Internship (DSRI), Health Sciences Research Internship (HSRI), BIPOC HSRI, and NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA). If you would like to gain research experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these competitive awards can provide you with financial support.
While the application process, award value, award duration, and student eligibility vary across the awards, they all have one thing in common – you first need to approach a faculty supervisor who is accepting students to inquire if they will be your sponsor for the award and mentor during the summer.

Contact a prospective faculty supervisor by email. Your email should contain the following information:
- A brief outline of why you want to work with the specific professor
- The opportunity you are interested in (BISRI, DSRI, BIPOC HSRI, HSRI, USRA, other)
- Your unofficial transcript
- A CV, including experiences that may be relevant to the research opportunity/lab
