“I have been so lucky to be a part of a program with so many kind and caring individuals! My favourite memory is the connections that I made with fellow students and professors in the last year of my undergrad. I developed more relationships with professors and friends in the last year of my degree than in my first three years combined. While the pandemic was and continues to be difficult, it pushed me to reach out to professors and peers in ways that I had not done previously, and it also revealed the kindness of those around me. It has felt comforting to have individuals with whom I could celebrate my successes and also share my struggles.
As someone who found it challenging in my first year to connect with others, it feels especially rewarding to graduate surrounded by a network of incredible professors and peers.
I truly appreciate everyone who has shown me support and kindness over the last four years!”

“Over the past four years in the Child Studies program I have made so many incredible memories with amazing individuals. I formed life-long friendships and worked alongside outstanding professors. My most valuable memory was my time as a Teaching Assistant where I was given the opportunity to support, motivate, and assist students within the Child Studies program. Knowing that I was able to make a positive impact on their learning experience throughout the semester is something I will always remember and cherish deeply. I am beyond grateful for my friends and the wonderful professors who made my journey memorable. I will miss my time at Carleton but am very excited to be attending Teachers College at the University of Ottawa this coming fall! I wish the best of luck to everyone in my program in their future endeavors, I cannot wait to see all of the amazing things that each of you do!”

“My favourite memory coming out of my program would have to be making amazing long-lasting relationships with people. Starting out as a transfer student there was a lot of uneasiness that came with starting at a new school and program. By making new friendships, I was able to overcome that hurdle and flourish at Carleton. I will always remember and stay connected with the people that made my experience at Carleton unforgettable.”

“One of the most memorable experiences I had in the program was during republic of childhood writers and speakers festival in 2019. The highlight for me was an evening talk delivered by Cindy Blackstock who gave an amazing presentation about her work and meeting her afterwards. That was one of the highlights of being part of a department that creates such amazing ways to engage with children and those who work, advocate and support childhood.”

“I am very excited to graduate, but at the same time, I will miss being a part of this program. It felt like a family in a way, because we all just wanted to help one another. I am very grateful to my past mentors who helped us as 1st year students in the ESP program (Enriched Support Program) to learn how to study and therefore get better grades in order to reach the program that we wanted to get into. I’ m not going to lie, university was tough, would I do it again? Probably not, but did I enjoy my time even though classes were long and difficult, yes. I am very thankful as well to my professors Dr. Julie Garlen, Dr. Monica Patterson, Dr. Julia Sinclair-Palm who always made class enjoyable and interactive but at the same time made sure that we learned the material. Another one of my favorite memories, although I don’t remember her name unfortunately, was when at the end of the semester, one of my past mentors gave us as her students cards to wish us success in our future. I have always appreciated that, because it made me feel like she actually cared which is really important to build that type of relationship between mentors and students. Thank you for always helping us as students and making sure that we succeed and always do well in our courses. God bless you all and good luck in your future endeavors!”

“I’m grateful for getting the chance to meet and become friends with so many like-minded people during my time at Carleton. I will cherish the memories made in class, on campus and exploring this (not-so-unfamiliar) city that I’ve lived in for the last 4 years. Cheers to the class of 2021 and to my other friends continuing their studies!”
