This strategic impact group focused on how to optimize the total contribution that employees make to the University. We initially thought of applying this idea to members of both CUASA and CUPE 2424, but for various reasons decided to focus on CUASA members only. Early reactions to the project were that it should not and could not be carried out, indicating a high degree of sensitivity to labour relations on campus.
Data were principally gathered by meeting with the Chairs and Directors of three faculties, however informal consultations with many other people proved to be useful as well. Some of the main lessons learned were that different units assign teaching and administration in very different ways, based on many strategies, that best practices are not shared among units, and that members of a unit may not be aware of what their own colleagues’ duties are. This suggests the need for further data-gathering and dialogue in order to optimize peoples’ contributions.
