This free, online training program is tailored for graduate students and early career researchers interested in the ethics and practice of fieldwork in forced migration studies.

Course Overview

In 2024, the Cross-Cultural Fieldwork Training Course in Forced Migration Studies will run from May 6 to 31, with a 2-week intensive program from May 6-17, and an opportunity for participants to present their research the week of May 27th.

The program is designed to equip emerging scholars with new research skills, to encourage reflection on ethical and methodological issues in refugee research, and to facilitate dialogue among participants. LERRN partners from around the world have contributed pre-recorded lectures, which are combined with readings and daily live discussions. The course does not qualify for a university credit, but participants who engage throughout the course will receive a certificate of completion.

Important Dates

  • Course Dates: May 6 to May 31, 2024 (including 2-week intensive May 6-17)
  • Deadline to apply: April 5, 2024
  • Notification of acceptance: April 8, 2024.

Course Format and Schedule

During the 2-week intensive, students will be required to attend a daily live discussion group Monday-Friday. These groups are tentatively scheduled from 9-10am Eastern Daylight Time (Ottawa time) and 5-6pm EDT to accommodate participants in different time zones.

These groups will be facilitated by the course facilitators and guest speakers. In preparation for the live class, students will be required to watch pre-recorded lectures contributed by LERRN partners (academics and practitioners) around the world and complete readings on that day’s topic. In addition to the required lectures and readings, there will be a range of optional lectures and readings that participants can access based on interest.

Following the 2-week intensive, students will have the opportunity to present their research and receive feedback the week of May 27th. Participants will have access to the course materials until May 31, 2024.

Course Facilitators

The course this year will be co-facilitated by Nimo Bokore, Associate Professor at the Carleton School of Social Work, and by Rachel McNally, a PhD Candidate at Carleton University who has worked with LERRN for the past five years and who has experience implementing interviews, focus groups, and archival research methods for refugee-related projects.
