Why Did You Want to Become a Mentor?

I have always had a natural tendency to offer advice or share resources with someone struggling with a challenge I had previously overcome. Whether it be showing how to pay for a meal at the University Centre Food Court with their campus card or giving tips and techniques for studying for a neuroscience exam, I have always readily shared information that has been beneficial to me because I know what it feels like to be on the opposite side and appreciate the help. There have been times this past school year, when I was overwhelmed with assignments. However, from what I have experienced as an FYC mentee, having someone who was there to listen made a huge difference. FYC Peer Mentors are trained in providing great resources and support for first-year students and help them achieve a great start at Carleton. I have benefitted greatly from the support as a mentee in the past, and now I can’t wait to be the help to other students.

Fun Fact About You?

I was homeschooled from Grade 6 to 9. My parents weren’t my teachers, and I did online school with online teachers. In the beginning at the age of 9, I genuinely thought my parents had granted me “no-school-for-life!” I eventually learnt that wasn’t the case, haha!
