Carleton Expert Available – Mary Simon named as Canada's Governor General

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced today that Inuk leader Mary Simon will be named as Canada’s first Indigenous Governor General. Carleton experts are available to comment.

Abele has worked with Indigenous people across Canada and parts of the circumpolar Arctic for most of her career. Her research has focused on northern economic and political development, Indigenous self-government, policy and programs important to Indigenous people living in cities, policy and program evaluation, qualitative research and citizen engagement.

Abele is a former director of the School of Public Policy and Administration at Carleton. She has published research reports with the National Centre for First Nations Governance, Canadian Policy Research Networks, the Institute for Research on Public Policy, the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and the Institute of Public Administration of Canada.

Minich’s research focuses on the practices of Indigenous self-determination in community, particularly Inuit self-determination practices in Nunavut. This includes studying the policy spaces in the cash and non-cash political economies and policy processes in community, self-government and citizen organizations.

Minich is available to discuss this appointment in general, including what it means for Indigenous representation in federal politics.
