Carleton Experts Available – Pride Month

Published on May 28, 2021

June marks Pride Month and Carleton experts are available to comment on related topics and research.

Abigail E. Curlew
PhD candidate, Department of Sociology and Anthropology

Email: AbigailCurlew@cmail.carleton.ca

Abigail can speak to a variety of LGBTQ issues, but she is well versed on transgender issues, violence against women and queer folks and forms of online hatred. She would also be happy to talk about trans pride, trans inclusion and how to support and uplift the trans community during pride month and within mainstream culture.

Alan Santinele Martino
Professor, The Pauline Jewett Institute Women’s and Gender Studies

Email: AlanSantineleMartino@cunet.carleton.ca

Santinele Martino’s primary areas of interest include the sociology of sexualities, sociology of gender and critical disability studies, as well as their intersections. Drawing on in-depth interviews with 46 adults with intellectual disabilities in Ontario, his current research explores how adults labeled with intellectual disabilities are kept out of sexual fields – spaces that bring together sexual actors in their pursuit for love, intimacy and pleasure – through a series of disabling social processes. He has worked closely with various self-advocacy groups and service providers in Canada and abroad to address questions related to sexuality and intimate citizenship.

He recently published a piece in The Conversation about the importance of virtual community.
