Carleton Student Awarded 2023 Rhodes Scholarship
Public Affairs and Policy Management student
heading to Oxford to pursue master’s
Carleton Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management student Maeve Collins-Tobin has become the university’s 7th Rhodes scholar. Valued at more than $100,000, the Rhodes Scholarship is one of the most prestigious in the world, covering the cost of postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford in the U.K., and Collins-Tobin is one of only 11 students from across Canada selected to receive the award.
“This is a tremendous recognition of Maeve’s academic excellence and community engagement,” says Carleton’s President and Vice Chancellor, Benoit-Antoine Bacon. “Maeve is challenging practices that affect the ways we govern and impact the Earth. I look forward to see how she will tackle these challenges and create positive change at Oxford and beyond. Congratulations Maeve!”
Originally from Newfoundland, Collins-Tobin is keenly interested in migration and climate change, including being a climate change activist in the Carleton community.
“We are incredibly proud of Maeve Collins-Tobin, who has received one of the greatest distinctions in academia,” said Brenda O’Neill, Dean, Faculty of Public Affairs (FPA) at Carleton.
“Maeve’s dedication to public policy, international relations, migration, refugee studies, and climate change reflects the mission of FPA to build a better society, better democracy, and address regional and global challenges. Maeve is the latest in a long line of FPA graduates who are making a difference in the world. We wish her every success at Oxford.”
Collins-Tobin is completing her final semester of a Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management, specializing in international relations and conflict. She looks forward to studying both a MSc. in Forced Migration and Refugee studies, and a MSc. in Global Governance and Diplomacy at Oxford, focusing on climate change. She hopes to work supporting informed and just policymaking in her future career.
