Celebrating Carleton's Spirit, Innovation and Community at Throwback
Carleton University was filled with energy and school spirit as Throwback, the university’s highly anticipated homecoming celebration, brought alumni, students and community members together from Sept. 26 to Oct. 6.
With a wide range of events showcasing everything from athletics to art, and new academic programs to engaging lectures, Throwback offered something for everyone and highlighted the vibrant culture of Carleton.
The celebration kicked off with an inspiring event for Sprott School of Business alumni and current students. Attendees had the chance to explore cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence applications, sparking thought-provoking discussions and excitement for the future. Meanwhile, the Faculty of Science showcased its innovative upcoming programs in data science and nursing, set to launch in September 2025.
The Faculty of Engineering and Design hosted a special networking event that featured a behind-the-scenes tour of its facilities, giving alumni and current students a firsthand look at the incredible work being done in engineering and design. The Economics Alumni Chapter brought together a crowd for an engaging reception, featuring keynote speaker and Carleton alumna, Jenna Sudds, Canada’s Minister of Families, Children and Social Development.
Another Throwback highlight was the annual Attallah Lecture hosted by the School of Journalism and Communication. This year’s lecture, “Meme War 2024: Networked Incitement in the Static Age,” explored the complexities of online culture and the impact of digital communication in today’s world.
Carleton varsity events brought Ravens pride to the forefront. Ravens football secured a 24-10 victory over the York Lions, while Ravens rugby dominated with a 27-17 win over the Montréal Carabins. The Ravens men’s hockey kicked off their season with an exciting home opener against Toronto Metropolitan University, and Ravens women’s soccer faced off against cross-town rivals, the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The excitement reached its peak with the always electric Panda Game.
Art and nature lovers were also treated to memorable experiences, including the Department of Biology’s 25th annual Butterfly Show, where the community marveled at the beauty and diversity of butterflies. Meanwhile, the Carleton University Art Gallery launched three new exhibitions, celebrating creativity and innovation in the arts.
Throwback 2024 was more than just a homecoming—it was a testament to the strong community spirit that defines Carleton. From academic innovation to athletic achievements and artistic expression, the events celebrated all that Carleton has to offer. It was a time to reconnect, reminisce and look forward to a bright future.
