NPSIA students are invited to join a conversation with Assistant Deputy Minister Elissa Golberg, and Deputy Director Jan Jakobiec as they discuss their careers in the public service.

Assistant Deputy Minister, Elissa Golberg, M.A. 97 (NPSIA)

Elissa Golberg is Assistant Deputy Minister for Strategic Policy at Global Affairs Canada. She is also currently the department’s Champion for Innovation and Experimentation, and Head of Performance Management and Results. Ms. Golberg has held several senior Canadian government roles, including Assistant Deputy Minister – Partnerships for Development Innovation (2015-17); Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (Geneva) and to the Conference on Disarmament (2011-15); Director-General of the Stabilization and Reconstruction Task Force (2009-11), and Representative of Canada in Kandahar, Afghanistan (2008-9).

Ms. Golberg is a member of the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, and sits on the Boards of the Centre for Global Governance and Innovation (CIGI) and the Lewis Perinbaum Award.

Ms. Golberg holds a Master’s degree in International Relations from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, and as proud alumnus, was pleased to have received Carleton University’s Humanitarian Award for “distinguished service to the global community”.  She is a recipient of the NATO ISAF General Service medal, the Queen’s Jubilee Medal, the Public Service Award of Excellence, and 3 Ministers’ Awards for Foreign Policy Excellence. She has been a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, and published articles on humanitarian, fragile state and public policy related matters.

Deputy Director, Jan Jakobiec, M.A. ‘00 (NPSIA)

Jan Jakobiec (NPSIA 2000), has 20 years of experience working on international development issues for the Government of Canada and civil society organizations. Currently the Deputy Director of the Burkina Faso and Bénin Development Program at Global Affairs Canada, Jan has worked on a diversity of issues including food security, humanitarian assistance, governance, gender and health, in both bilateral and multilateral contexts. With diplomatic postings to Ethiopia, Mali and Haiti, Jan has experience managing complex programming and leading diverse teams in low income and fragile states, as well as with regional bodies such as the African Union Commission.
