Fanny Siauw-Soegiarto is a PhD candidate and a recipient of the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. As an independent Research Economist and a Research Associate at Carleton’s Centre for Trade Policy and Law, she works closely with the policy community and her research have been published through different outlets. She was also one of the winners of the 2017 SSHRC-GAC Policy Ideas Challenge where her policy research was one of the two selected to be presented to senior government officials.
Fanny’s research focuses on international trade in particular the proliferation of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). She specializes in trade and investment policy analysis using gravity modelling with a regional focus on ASEAN and Indonesia. Her other research interests include Canadian trade policies, international trade negotiations and digital economy.
Her dissertation examines the economic and geopolitical factors behind the belated and dramatic expansion of Indonesia’s FTA activities since 2010 that has also coexisted with a continuation, and even extension of its tradition of protectionist economic policies. An analytical framework that integrates international economic and political economy theories is developed in this research to systematically assess this paradoxical policy shift using both quantitative and qualitative research methods.
Her research is supervised by Professors David Long and Dane Rowlands.
