PhD Candidate (International Economic Policy)
Degrees: | MA Economics (Carleton University), B.Comm Honours in Economics (Saint Mary’s University) |
Karla is a PhD candidate specializing in International Economic Policy at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) at Carleton University. Her research examines the impact of the ‘national border effect’ on international trade flows between Canada and the United States. For her dissertation, Karla has developed the most comprehensive dataset to date on Canada-U.S. international trade flows, encompassing trade data between all Canadian provinces and territories and all 50 U.S. states from 2000 to 2020—a significant expansion compared to previous studies, which analyzed a maximum of 10 years of data.
Karla aims for her research findings to inform and enhance Canadian international trade policy and negotiations, providing valuable insights into the factors influencing trade between Canada and the United States.
In addition to her academic work, Karla works as an economist with Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC), an agency within the Department of National Defence of the Canadian federal government.
Karla is also a passionate advocate for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) across academia and the public sector. She actively contributes to multiple EDI advisory groups, including the EDI Committees at DRDC and the Department of National Defence, where she champions inclusive practices and policies.
