Dr. Katie Lucas ( She/Her )

Associate Professor, Teaching Stream

Dr. Katie Lucas is an award-winning educator currently serving as an Associate Professor (Teaching Stream) in the School of Nursing at Carleton University. Previously, she was part of the Integrated Science program in the Faculty of Science, where she developed and led several interdisciplinary and experiential courses. With academic training in biological sciences (M.Sc., Carleton University; Ph.D., University of Bristol) and postdoctoral research in computational neuroscience, Dr. Lucas has investigated diverse topics including animal sensory systems, auditory neuroscience, and neural networks. Her research experience informs a dynamic teaching portfolio that spans science communication, physiology, and neurobiology.

A dedicated educational innovator, Dr. Lucas integrates creativity, equity, and accessibility into all aspects of her pedagogy. She is the founding faculty advisor of the Carleton Undergraduate Journal of Science, which offers students hands-on experience in academic publishing and peer mentorship. She collaborates with institutions like Ingenium and the Canadian Museum of Nature to provide students with real-world training in science communication and inclusive exhibit design. Her leadership has been recognized through multiple awards, including the Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching (2024), the Faculty of Science Impact Award (2023), and the Future Learning Innovation Fellowship (2023). In addition to her academic role, Dr. Lucas contributes extensively to curriculum development, faculty mentorship, and academic governance, embodying a strong commitment to student success, community engagement, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
