Douglas and Mary Anglin
Doug Anglin often said, “We make a living by what we earn, but we make a life by what we give”, inspired by Winston Churchill’s famous quote.
And true to his words, “giving” is exactly what the Anglin family did through the establishment of the Anglin Scholarship for Zambian Students to enhance the teaching and research capacity of the University of Zambia (UNZA). This unique example of inter-university cooperation enables and encourages students to pursue a Master’s degree in any field of study at Carleton University, and then return to pursue a teaching career at UNZA. It was a natural outcome of Mary and Doug’s long association with the people of Zambia, beginning when Doug served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of UNZA from 1965 to 1969. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by UNZA in 2011, in recognition of his contributions.
Doug’s career path was influenced by his early years as a naval officer in World War II. He later taught political science and international affairs at Carleton from 1958 to 1989, with research interests focusing on peace, independence, and democracy in Africa. When in Ottawa, Mary and Doug provided a home away from home for many international students. In both their personal and professional lives, they dedicated themselves to human rights, racial justice, and equal educational opportunities for all.
Mary and Doug had the privilege of meeting the first two scholarship recipients, and two more Zambian students were awarded scholarships and completed their postgraduate studies at Carleton prior to Doug’s death in 2021. These graduates reinforced the intent of the scholarship and serve as a source of inspiration for upcoming scholars at UNZA.
Support for future students is ensured by a generous bequest in the Anglin wills. Doug’s legacy also includes the donation of his rich collection of records, articles, and other resources to the Institute of African Studies at Carleton. Mary and Doug Anglin’s investment in the people and places that had a profound impact on their own lives will continue through the Anglin Scholarship for Zambian Students at Carleton University.
