Hubert Jean-Ruel

Professor Jean-Ruel is the Canada Research Chair in Advanced Photonic Sensing Components and Systems (Tier II).
His research focuses on the development of advanced photonic sensing components and systems:
- Simulation, design, fabrication, and characterization of novel multi-functional fiber Bragg grating sensors and systems
- Fiber-optic based DNA amplification and detection
- All-fiber Brillouin spectroscopy systems
- Fiber and free space Fabry-Perot based optical spectrum analyzers
- Integration of tilted fiber Bragg gratings into microfluidic lab-on-chips
- Development with collaborators of novel nanoparticle coatings and functionalizations
- Self-monitoring fiber grating-based micro-actuators
Applications
Biomedical devices, environment monitoring, and fundamental research:
- Acceleration of biomechanical and magnonic research
- Point-of-care diagnostic and genetic testing for early detection of diseases and personalized medicine
- Environmental sensing (air, soil, and water quality monitoring)
