Laura Newton Miller
Librarian IV
Faculty: Library
Question 1: I believe that I would be an excellent candidate to be considered as a Academic Staff Governor because:
I have been a librarian at Carleton for almost 20 years, working both in service and “behind the scenes” and with increasing responsibilities during that time. Assessment is one of my current roles. I take a look at data and opinions/feedback about the library and use that information to help people make informed decisions about the space and our collections. I played a lead role in developing our library’s current strategic plan, and was a member of Carleton’s Strategic Integrated Planning Committee to determine higher level goals for the university. I really enjoy looking at things from a bigger picture perspective and seeing how it can help the library or the university. I would love an opportunity to serve on the Board of Governors to understand the university from another different perspective, and I believe that my experiences make me an excellent candidate for the job.
Question 2: I have the following skills and experiences which would be beneficial in my role as Academic Staff Governor:
- Head of Collections & Assessment, MacOdrum Library
- Lead the library in our current strategic plan (Have also written papers about library strategic planning)
- Member of Carleton’s Strategic Integrated Plan committee
- Member of SQAPC- Senate Quality Assurance & Planning Committee (non-voting)
- Work on updating policies relating to collection development
Question 3: If elected to the Board, what would you like to gain from the experience and/or what skills would you like to further develop?
I would like to gain a deeper understanding of how the university works- how decisions are made on the bigger picture side of things. I would really enjoy working with people from different parts of the Carleton community
