You do not need to formally sign up to participate in the Student Support Certificate. Simply register and attend a workshop associated with the Student Support Certificate. Make sure you complete the attendance process while in the workshop, and the session will automatically be applied to your progress toward your Student Support Certificate. Once you’ve completed any 5 workshops, you’ll be awarded your certificate.

The time commitment for the Student Support Certificate varies depending on which workshops you decide to take. Workshops range from 1.5 hours to 3 hours each, and you must complete 5 to earn your certificate. There is no time restriction to complete the Student Support Certificate, so some participants finish within a term, while others spread it out over a couple of years.

Yes! Simply e-mail StudentSupportCertificate@carleton.ca and we will add your previous workshop attendance into the new system.

No. Every participant is empowered to choose the sessions that fit best with their interests, learning goals, and prior experiences. There are no requirements to complete specific workshops, simply choose 5 sessions that are considered part of the program.

In the previous version of the Student Support Certificate, participants were required to complete 6 workshops to receive their certificate. There were four required sessions: Resources and Referrals, Effective Communication and De-escalation Skills, Cross-Cultural Competence Training, and Indigenous Cultural Awareness. Participants also had to choose two electives: Supporting Students in Distress or Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Violence, and one free elective.
In the new program, participants can choose any 5 workshops. Previously, there was also a requirement to complete a short learning assessment and reflection in Brightspace after the workshops, which is no longer required.

Yes, students are able to participate in most SSC workshops. Please contact StudentSupportCertificate@carleton.ca to request access to the registration portal.

Yes. Each facilitator sets a minimum and maximum number of participants to ensure an effective learning environment. If the maximum capacity has been reached, you will be able to put your name on a waitlist for the next available spot. If the minimum number of registrants has not been reached, a workshop may be postponed or cancelled.

The Student Support Certificate expires 4 years from the date it is issued. This is because higher education is an evolving profession, and there is always new research and best practices emerging in the field. We want to encourage everyone to stay current on recent developments, as well as keep your skills sharp over time.

Yes, the certificate will include an issue date and expiry date.

Yes, you will receive a paper Certificate signed by Suzanne Blanchard, Vice-President (Students and Enrolment). You can expect to receive your certificate through interoffice mail after the completion of your final workshop.

In the previous iteration of the Student Support Certificate, there were concentrations that recognized participation in a grouping of workshops related to a particular competency area. In the current Student Support Certificate, participants can choose to build their own learning pathway, or follow along with one of the new suggested pathways.
