Carleton University has been recognized by Carbon 613, Ottawa’s Sustainable Business Network, for its sustainability programs and ongoing drive to reduce its carbon emissions. Having only been a member of the city-wide network, for a little over a year, Carleton has won the ‘Emerging Excellence Award’ recognizing both work to date and a long-term commitment to ensure Carleton becomes zero-carbon campus by 2050.
Carleton has a strong history of promoting sustainability in higher education and continues to be one of the leading universities in this field, recently being ranked 2nd in Canada within the UI green metric, a global ranking for university sustainability. To date, Carleton has reduced emissions by 35%, achieved zero waste in areas of the campus, continues to promote and allow for alternative transportation and at the core of its role engages and develops teaching and research towards environmental and sustainable outcomes. In doing so, ensuring that all students graduating Carleton are environmentally aware and engaged.
