Inclusive Access provides students with required digital course materials on or before the first day of class at a reduced cost, billed through tuition with an option to opt out.
What is Inclusive Access and Why Does It Matter?
Inclusive Access (IA) is a course materials model used in higher education where students automatically receive digital textbooks and learning resources through their learning platform before classes begin. Costs are included in tuition or course fees, with a window for students to opt out if they prefer other options. By eliminating delays in accessing materials, IA ensures all students start the term equally prepared, regardless of their financial situation.
The primary benefit of IA is affordability at scale. Institutions negotiate discounted pricing with publishers, resulting in student savings compared to traditional print textbooks. Canadian institutions report significant cumulative savings for students, while also reducing the financial stress that can contribute to delayed purchases, poor student outcomes or course withdrawal.
IA also improves convenience and equity. Materials are integrated directly into the learning management system (LMS), removing the need for access codes, bookstore visits, or upfront payments. This “day‑one access” model supports student readiness and helps level the playing field between students who can afford early purchases and those who cannot.
