For Michael Hapke, hockey has always been about more than the game. It’s about bringing people together—creating a welcoming space where community members can develop their skills, share experiences and cultivate lasting connections.
That spirit is what led Michael to open his backyard to neighbours, friends and family, inviting them to skate on their homemade ice rink. The late nights and early mornings were well worth it, as the rink became a place where countless memories were made, especially those shared with his two sons.
These same values of community, connection and giving back inspired alumnus Michael Hapke to make a $1 million donation in support of Carleton Athletics. Hockey played an instrumental role in shaping his values of perseverance and teamwork, and through his generosity, Michael hopes to empower the next generation of student-athletes to fulfill their aspirations.

Hapke, President and Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Group of Companies, graduated from Carleton in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts in Law. He attributes his time at Carleton to influencing his personal and professional journey in such a profound way that he hopes this gift will encourage others to reach their own potential while on campus.
“For me, this was an opportunity to give back to an institution that gave me the opportunity to grow and dream, which helped shape my career, and to share the joy that was brought to me by being on the ice. I want to give that to others.”
In recognition of this transformational contribution, the university’s on-campus ice facility has been renamed the Advanced Capital Ice House for a 10-year period. Hapke’s contribution supports Carleton’s commitment to providing high-quality athletic facilities to the campus and broader community while expanding access to the university’s hockey programming for youth and families in Ottawa.
“We are thrilled that Michael Hapke has chosen to partner with Carleton University in championing lifelong athletic excellence,” said Suzanne Blanchard, Carleton Vice President (Students and Enrolment). “Through his meaningful investment in Carleton Athletics, Hapke is helping to create a vibrant environment where student-athletes and the Ottawa community can thrive.”
The Advanced Capital Ice House will continue to serve as the home of Carleton Ravens men’s and women’s ice hockey teams as well as a community hub for recreation and training.

As Corrie Hobin, Interim Chief Advancement Officer, shared, “Carleton is more than a campus, it’s the anchor of a community shaped by the enduring connections of our alumni.”
Hapke’s generous contribution represents an investment in the future, one that enhances the student-athlete experience while keeping the Advanced Capital Ice House firmly rooted as a shared space for the Carleton and Ottawa community alike.
