Graduate Candidate
Question 1: I believe that I would be an excellent candidate to be considered as a Student Governor because:
I am pursuing a PhD at Carleton University, in Law and Legal Studies. I hold BA’s in Human Rights and Equity Studies, and BA in Social Science and an MA in Public Policy Administration and Law, all from York University. I hold certificates in Law and Society, Public Policy Analysis, and graduate diplomas in Democratic Administration and Ethics and Public Affairs. My primary research interests have been in labour, policy, equity, human rights (im)-migration, citizenship, government, political debate, public reason and agenda setting. Georgette has experience working at all levels of government, within a range of departments and ministries. She has extensive experience in student government during her undergraduate and graduate studies, serving in roles of Communications and Vice President. She has worked extensively in strategic policy and research in the Privy Council Office, Employment Social Development Canada, Immigration Refugee Citizenship Canada and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council, Canada Revenue Agency as a Policy Analyst in the Research and Innovation Lab. She has sat on a number of task forces regarding improvement, equity diversity and inclusion and modernization. She has presented internationally in Canada Jamaica, Czech Republic, England, Germany and Poland on various topics such as on discrimination, migration, race and gender as it relates to systems, programs, policies and government. Her research aspirations include making political debate and access to what is deliberated in Parliament more accessible and understandable to citizens. She seeks to create strategic use of tools of political engagement tools to provide measurable outcomes for vulnerable populations in society. She is passionate about equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Question 2: I have the following skills and experiences which would be beneficial in my role as Student Governor:
I believe I would be an excellent candidate as a student Governor because I possess a range of experiences at all levels of government; specifically within the House of Commons. I am familiar with meeting practices, policy and procedure inclusive of mechanisms that support and facilitate useful meetings. I understand the apolitical nature of the role and its value to the institution as well as population at large. I have over 10 years of experience in the public sector and labour movement.
Question 3: If elected to the Board, what would you like to gain from the experience and/or what skills would you like to further develop?
If elected to the board I aspire to develop my skills around public speaking, legal responsibility, governance, communication and decorum. Additionally I hope to learn more about the way that the university functions from a multifaceted approach.
