Carleton Environmental Engineering Students shine at A&WMA’s 2010 Conference and Exhibition
A group of four students from the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department participated in the Environmental Challenge International, a student team competition organized every year by the Air and Waste Management Association (A&WMA) to develop a solution to a “real world” environmental problem. This year, teams had to develop modern and environmentally sustainable alternatives to replace the traditional bitumen extraction processes of the Alberta Oil Sands. After winning the local competition in Ottawa, organized by the Society of Environmental Engineering, Development, management and Science (SEEDS) and the Ottawa Valley Chapter of the A&WMA, Carleton’s team flew to Calgary to present their technological and communication proposal to transform the Oil Sands Industry in Alberta. Ten teams were competing at the International Challenge, seven from USA, and three from Canada. After several days of hard work which included a poster set up, formal presentation, role playing and networking with industry people, Carleton’s team was awarded 4th place and a $2000 prize. The team received many compliments on their skills and proposal, and as first time competitors, they were encouraged to continue participating in future years. The team thanks Carleton University, their Civil and Environmental Engineering professors, SEEDS and the Ottawa Valley Chapter of the A&WMA for their support and guidance.
