Students awarded MH Waste Management Awards

Morrison Hershfield Limited’s Ottawa Environmental Department recently sponsored an Award of Distinction for the top student as well as awards for the top two term projects for ENVE 4101 Waste Management at Carleton University.  The awards were handed out at a recent presentation ceremony hosted by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and attended by Dr. Paul Van Geel, Mr. Andrew Harkness, Dr. Mustafa Ahmed and Mr. Jamie Bonany.

The Morrison Hershfield Limited Award of Distinction for Top Student was presented to Robyn Chatwin-Davies.  The Morrison Hershfield Limited Award of Excellence was presented to students with top term project rankings. This year’s term project topic was “Development of a Methodological Framework for the Recycling of Drywall”.  The project groups presented case studies from USA, Sweden, The Netherlands, England and Japan. Then, they developed a methodological framework to be applied for a city in Canada.  The Term Project Awards were presented to: Dina Megalla, Trevor Shiomi, Robyn Chatwin-Davies, Lealem Abebe, Jean-Charles Finnigan, Alexander Fisher, Amanda Bromley, Baqar Rizvi and Ryan Sneek.

The jury was composed of Dr. Paul Van Geel, Professor and Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mr. Michael Clapham, Senior Environmental Specialist at Natural Resources Canada, Dr. Mustafa Ahmed, the course instructor and environmental engineer at Morrison Hershfield Limited and Jamie Bonany, the teaching assistant of the course. Dr. Paul Van Geel praised the students for a job well done and thanked Morrison Hershfield for sponsoring the awards; “It’s great to have a local consulting firm support our students and the students appreciate the real-world perspective  they bring to the classroom”.

The award certificates and cash prizes were presented by Andrew Harkness, Manager of the Ottawa Environmental Department at Morrison Hershfield Limited.  Mr. Harkness said: “Morrison Hershfield was very pleased to return again this year, as a representative of the consulting engineering industry, to partner with Carleton University in sponsoring these awards and to share perspectives on the environmental sector.  The students’ work was extremely impressive and they are all to be congratulated.”

The ENVE 4101 course provides students with a comprehensive background in waste management and includes topics such as the logistics of waste, landfill operations, hazardous waste management, and design of composting facilities, waste to energy and mine waste.
