Prof. Santana Quintero elected as Secretary-General of ICOMOS

Congratulations to Professor Mario Santana Quintero for his election as secretary-general of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). Prof. Santana Quintero joined ICOMOS in 1996. During his long trajectory, Santana served as president of the ICOMOS/ISPRS International Committee on Heritage Documentation between 2010 and 2014, board member of ICOMOS International between 2014 and 2017, vice president of ICOMOS between 2017 and 2020, and board member of ICOMOS Canada´s National Committee from 2015 to present.

Santana is the third member of ICOMOS Canada to be elected secretary-general and second from Carleton University. The late Professor Herb Stovel from our School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies served between 1990 and 1993. Santana’s role as secretary-general is to ensure the correct and formal documentation of decisions. He works with the President on the preparation of meetings, with the Director-General on the Secretariat’s direction and operation and with the Treasurer General on the budgets, among many other important managerial activities crucial for ICOMOS.

ICOMOS is a network of 11,000 experts that benefits from its members’ interdisciplinary exchange, including architects, historians, archaeologists, art historians, geographers, anthropologists, engineers, and town planners. ICOMOS works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places. It is the only global non-government organization of this kind dedicated to promoting the application of theory, methodology, and scientific techniques to the conservation of the architectural and archaeological heritage.
