Biography
Dr. Fazileh received his Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Civil Engineering from the Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) in Iran in 2003, and his Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in Structural Engineering (Structural Mechanics and Materials) from the Sharif University of Technology in 2005. His Master’s research focus was on “Assessment of Crack Growth in Bi-Materials Interface using Cohesive Crack Model”. Dr. Fazileh pursued his Ph.D. studies at Carleton University under the supervision of Professor Humar. Farrokh’s research work was focused on Displacement-Based Seismic Design of reinforced concrete shear walls, moment-resisting frames, and asymmetric plan buildings.
After completing his Ph.D. studies in 2011, Dr. Fazileh joined the consulting industry as a senior structural engineer at Adjeleian Allen Rubeli (AAR), for over seven years. During these years, Farrokh’s sustained focus was on improving the resilience of building structures to earthquakes. Farrokh has contributed to the efforts to rehabilitate and conserve several heritage and high-stake buildings in the National Capital Region including the Bank of Canada buildings, East Block of Parliament Building, Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards, and Algonquin College DARE District, to name a few, as well as the seismic design of many new residential and office towers in several cities in eastern Canada. Dr. Fazileh has also participated in multiple seismic peer reviews and acted as the court expert witness for the rehabilitation of the West Block and Centre Block of Parliament of Canada, West Memorial Building, North Bay Courthouse, and Kirkland Lake wastewater treatment facility roof collapse.
Dr. Fazileh is an adjunct research professor and lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University. He is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Fazileh has offered multiple courses including Reinforced Concrete and Steel Designs, Matrix Analysis of Structures, and Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings. He has authored and/or co-authored over 80 research papers and technical reports. Dr. Fazileh has been with the Construction Research Centre of the National Research Council Canada since 2018, as a Senior Research Officer focusing on the development of Seismic Evaluation and Upgrading Guidelines, as well as Code-related R&D towards Performance-Based Codes. Dr. Fazileh is the research advisor to the Standing Committee on Earthquake Engineering (SC-ED) of the National Building Code of Canada, since 2021.
