Mario Martinelli

Activities & Research Interests

Mario Martinelli is a geotechnical engineer with over 15 years of international experience in infrastructure, bridging advanced research and engineering practice across marine works, offshore energy and geotechnical risk.

He currently works as Lead Engineer in the Dams and Geotechnical Engineering Department at SPERI, focusing on geotechnical engineering for complex infrastructure, including marine and offshore works, dams and foundations.

Prior to joining SPERI, he spent 12 years at Deltares as Principal Engineer and Research Manager, combining technical leadership, engineering consultancy and applied research. His work covered international projects in offshore wind, harbour developments, large-scale infrastructure, liquefaction, landslides and soil–structure interaction, as well as research on large-deformation geotechnical problems and the development and application of advanced numerical tools, including the Material Point Method (MPM).

He is an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University and author or co-author of more than 90 journal and conference papers. His research interests include advanced numerical modelling, large-deformation geotechnical problems, geotechnical earthquake engineering, soil–structure interaction, landslide processes and MPM applications in geotechnical engineering.
