Tom has a degree in environmental economics and completed graduate studies in climate change economics. Tom also has degrees in environmental engineering, and completed graduate studies specializing in GHG measurement, air pollution and clean technologies. Tom is a registered professional engineer in Ontario, Canada. Tom is a certified knowledge manager.
Tom Baumann started in the environmental sector in the early 1990s and has worked in the public, private and non-profit sectors. Tom has worked in the climate change sector since 1998, and specifically with GHG standardization for over 12 years in various roles. Tom leads ClimateCHECK and Collaborase, and he is co-founder of the Greenhouse Gas Management Institute (GHGMI). Tom’s experience covers North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
Tom is one of the preeminent authorities on climate change standards. Tom is International Chair of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) climate change standards (ISO TC207/SC7 GHG Management and Related Activities). As Chair of ISO TC 207/SC7, Tom leads the efforts of 75 countries within a bureaucratically- and politically-complex process in accordance with relevant WTO rules and the ISO Directives to develop international standards and capacity to meet the needs of diverse stakeholders for GHG mitigation and adaptation.
Tom’s experience with GHG standards includes ISO, WBCSD-WRI GHG Protocol, Climate Disclosure Standards Board, UNFCCC CDM, and various GHG programs (e.g. Climate Action Reserve, Verified Carbon Standard, Gold Standard). Tom has been in various publications and in 2011 Tom was lead author for an ISO publication on the status and road ahead for GHG standards. In addition to standards development, Tom has extensive experience in the application of GHG standards for many organizations and sectors. Tom was featured in the ISO Focus Magazine November-December 2014 issue on Post-Kyoto Climate Solutions. While Manager of GHG Measurement and Reporting for the Government of Canada’s Climate Change Technology Investment Fund, Tom was the main author of the System for Measurement And Reporting for Technologies (SMART) protocol. The SMART protocol is being used by Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to evaluate the benefits of the clean technology project investments.
Tom is also strongly focused on capacity building, collaboration and knowledge management. As Co-Founder of the GHG Management Institute, the world’s leading GHG training provider, Tom helps develop programs to support practitioners. Tom is the inventor of the Collaborase web platform, being used by green standardization initiatives implementing an “Interactive Standards 2.0” system.
