Prospective Graduate Students

The graduate programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering are offered through the Joint Institutes with the University of Ottawa leading to Doctoral and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Civil Engineering programs are offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering (OCICE) and Environmental Engineering programs are offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Environmental Engineering (OCIENE). Furthermore, Environmental Engineering Master’s students can complete a Collaborative Specialization in Climate Change. Details can be found in the graduate calendar.

We are pleased to announce that the Department now offers M.Eng., M.A.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees in Building Engineering. For more information regarding our Building Engineering programs, please visit this webpage.

The department also participates in the Infrastructure Protection and International Security (MIPIS)  program. Details are found on the IPIS website and you can apply here.

Joint Institutes

The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering (OCICE)

The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Civil Engineering (OCICE) was established in 1984 by the Department of Civil Engineering at Carleton University and the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ottawa, both located in the city of Ottawa, to combine the research strengths of the two departments and to give students access to the professors, courses and facilities at both universities. Students register at the university with which their supervisor is affiliated but have free access to the classes and facilities at both universities affiliated. More information about the OCICE Institute is found here.

The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Environmental Engineering (OCIENE)

Established in 2000, the Institute combines the research strengths and resources of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University and the Department of Civil Engineering and the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Ottawa. Programs leading to M.Eng., M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Engineering are available through the Institute. Registration will be at the university with which the student’s supervisor is affiliated. More information about the OCIENE Institute is found here.

Graduate Funding

M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. students are offered a competitive funding package upon admission. These funds are comprised of scholarships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships.

The minimum funding for domestic Ph.D. students is $35,000/year. Domestic M.A.Sc. applicants with a CGPA greater than B+ who, receive Research Assistantship, will receive a minimum funding of $19,500/year. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the exact level and the details of their funding package with potential supervisors as early as possible during the application process. Note that the actual funding level can be higher than the above-mentioned minimum amount if the student receives external awards or a higher Research Assistantship.

International Ph.D. students also receive an International Doctoral Tuition Support, reducing their tuition to the amount paid by domestic Ph.D. students in the same program.

The main graduate scholarships are:

Applications for all these must be submitted in late September, and the scholarships are awarded in late March.
