Postdoctoral Research Position available: Micro/Nanoplastics in Environmental Matrices

Contact: Prof. Banu Ormeci, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. banuormeci@cunet.carleton.ca
Prof. Banu Örmeci is seeking a highly motivated research associate to join our dynamic research team focused on investigating the fate, occurrence, removal, transport and uptake of microplastics in wastewater, sludge, and soil samples. The successful candidate will conduct cutting-edge research on microplastic pollution in various environmental matrices, with a focus on wastewater treatment plants, sludge treatment and land application, and soil ecosystems. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growing field of microplastics research and develop innovative solutions for environmental protection. Key responsibilities include 1. Design and execute experiments to study the occurrence and fate of micro/nanoplastics in environmental samples, 2. Investigate transport mechanisms of microplastics between different environmental matrices including wastewater, sludge, and soil, 3. Develop and optimize analytical methods for detecting and characterizing microplastics in complex environmental samples, 4. Evaluate the efficiency of wastewater and sludge treatment technologies in removing microplastics. 5. Analyze the potential impacts of microplastics on soil ecosystems and agricultural practices, 6. Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams and contribute to scientific publications.
The candidates should have a PhD in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field. A strong background in microplastics research is required. Expertise in analytical techniques such as FTIR, microFTIR, and pyrolysis-GC/MS are preferred. We are looking for excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
To apply, please submit your CV, a cover letter detailing your research experience and interests, and contact information for three references to banuormeci@cunet.carleton.ca. The initial appointment will be for 6 months in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University and may be extended. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled, preferably before November 30, 2024.
