Background

Mitacs Globalink invites undergraduate students from around the world to experience Canada as a leading destination for research & innovation. This competitive program pairs top-ranked students and faculty at Canadian universities for a 12-week research project of mutual interest in the period of May to September.

Faculty members benefit from students’ international perspectives and experience, and can evaluate potential graduate students while demonstrating the breadth of Canadian research opportunities.

Globalink Research Interns network with professors, government representatives, and business leaders, and develop their skills in a variety of professional development workshops. The experience is enriched by the presence of Globalink Student Advisors who help interns acclimate to life on campus and in Canada.

Opportunity

Mitacs Globalink offers Canadian faculty members in science, engineering, mathematics, humanities, and social sciences the opportunity to work with exceptional senior undergraduate students from Brazil, China, India, and Mexico over a 12-week research project from May to September.

We aim to minimize administrative requirements for faculty – Mitacs Globalink oversees the application process, professor and student matching, travel and accommodation logistics, and coordination with host university administration. Additionally, the Mitacs Globalink Graduate Fellowship offers additional financial support for those Globalink Research Interns interested in returning to Canada for graduate studies.

Student Eligibility

This is a fully-funded opportunity to engage an exceptional, international student in a 4-year undergraduate or 5-year dual degree program.

The students are preparing for their final year of study, will have at least an 8/10 GPA (or equivalent) and will soon be considering their choice of universities for graduate or post-graduate studies.  This is an opportunity to preview potential Masters/Doctoral candidates, and to leverage the technical expertise developed in the top universities in India, China, Brazil or Mexico for your research team. The following application form is for Canadian faculty members who are interested in hosting an international undergraduate student to work on a research project under their supervision.

Roles and Responsibilities – Faculty

Host professors must ensure the following is in place for their Globalink Research Intern prior to the start of the internship (as required):

  • Research supervision
  • E-mail and internet access
  • Lab and/or office space
  • Software or hardware
  • Any safety or orientation information required for the project

Globalink Research Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week on their research project.  During the duration of the project, Globalink Research Interns may be invited to attend industry and/or government relations events, professional skills training workshops, or conferences.  Supervising professors will be notified of their intern’s potential absences as far in advance as possible, and every attempt will be made to schedule these events outside of working hours.

Matching Process

  • Professor project proposals are submitted to Mitacs, reviewed, and upon acceptance, entered into an online database.
  • Applications from students are submitted to Mitacs. Students must select a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 7 research projects from the online database.
  • The Mitacs Science and Technology team scores each application based on criteria including, but not limited to, GPA, university, and research experience, and ranks students based on their score.
  • A list of possible matches is generated by combining the lists of professors submitted by all students. Each match is weighted based on the student’s score and ranking.
  • Please note that approved projects are student-driven. If a professor’s prospective project is not selected for consideration by a student during the application process, it will not be assigned a Globalink Research Intern.

Every effort is made to find a student with the appropriate skills and research interests for each project. However, Mitacs is unable to guarantee that each submitted project will receive a student placement.
