Carleton University’s Pavel Cheben, adjunct research professor in the Department of Electronics, has been awarded Slovakia’s highest international honour for his work in photonics and optics.

The Scientific Council of the Slovak Academy of Sciences awarded him the 2014 International Prize of the Slovak Academy of Sciences for outstanding work in the field of technical sciences. Several dignitaries were present at the ceremony, including Kathy Bunka, charge d’affaires of the Embassy of Canada, His Excellency Dusan Chrenek, head of the Representation of the European Commission, and Jaromir Pastorek, president of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

Cheben has been promoted to the rank of Fellow of the European Optical Society for his research achievements in the field of optics and photonics and service to the optics and photonics community. The promotion was announced at the European Optical Society Annual General Assembly in Berlin on Sept. 16, 2014.
