Honoring the life and work of Canada’s former Minister for Finance, James M. Flaherty, the objectives of this program are as follows;
- To build on the network of academic links between Canada and Ireland, resulting in increased academic co-operation, greater inter-cultural understanding and the potential for increased trade between both countries, and
- To support the development of excellence in research of individual scholars who have an expressed and demonstrable commitment to research in a field relating to both Canada & Ireland.
Opportunity
It is the aim of the Foundation to support preeminent scholars and academics who are leaders, or future leaders, in their academic or post-academic professional field, and to this end, awards are made on two levels:
- If you are a PhD student or post-doctoral academic in the early stages of your research career, you may be eligible for the Flaherty Research Scholarship. This award supports a short research visit of four to six weeks, and is designed to help scholars make contacts with researchers working in related research topics, with a view to widening and deepening the scholar’s research horizons, ideally leading to continued collaboration in future research.
The James M. Flaherty Program is provided with the assistance of the Government of Canada, via the International Education Division of Global Affairs Canada, and with the assistance of the Irish Government, via the Emigrant Support Programme, administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
These awards will support up to six Canadian research scholars travelling to Ireland, and up to six Irish research scholars travelling to Canada, for visits of between 4 and 6 weeks in duration.
With this strand, it is the aim of the Foundation to support individuals who are future leaders in their academic or post academic field, whose work will fulfill one or more of the following;
- contribute to greater collaboration between both countries in areas of public service, economics and trade
- contribute to a greater shared cultural understanding between countries
- explore areas of strategic importance to both countries, such as energy, transport, communications, health, natural resources and environmental sustainability
- open ways in which the Irish diaspora in Canada, and the Canadian diaspora in Ireland can deepen their engagement with their country of origin.
The awards will be for an amount up to CDN$10k/€7k, precise details of which will depend on the duration of stay.
Canadian research scholars awarded in 2018 must travel on or before 14th March 2019.
Irish research scholars awarded in 2018 must travel on or before 1st June 2019.
Eligibility
The Flaherty Program has been initiated to support to the continued development of academic links between Canada and Ireland. Applications are welcome from applicants of all ages, from all academic disciplines, whose work has the potential to further the objectives of this program, as outlined here.
Applicants must be permanent residents of either country, and have been living there for at least three of the past five years. For further information on this criterion, please view the FAQ page.
Funding Available
The Flaherty Scholarships support research visits of four to six weeks, with the amount of the award depending on the duration of the research visit.
Awards are structured as follows;
Canadian Scholarships
- Travel expenses up to a total of CDN$ 1,200* will be paid to scholars (on transfer of receipts to ICUF).
- A weekly stipend of CDN$ 1,400* will be paid to scholars, to cover accommodation (subject to receipts), and general living expenses. Amount will therefore range from CDN$ 5,600 (four week visit) to CDN$ 8,400 (six week visit).
Irish Scholarships
- Travel expenses up to a total of €800* will be paid to scholars (on transfer of receipts to ICUF).
- A weekly stipend of € 1,000* will be paid to scholars, to cover accommodation (subject to receipts), and general living expenses. This will range from €4,000 (four week visit) to €6,000 (six week visit).
The precise details of the visits are left to the scholars to decide on and arrange for themselves. Scholars are of course free to extend the duration of their stay for personal or professional reasons.
* While it is not anticipated, actual amounts may vary from those outlined above, in order to accommodate exchange rate fluctuations, budgetary adjustments and other unforeseeable external factors.
