NPSIA-PT&D is pleased to announce the 2-day pilot of The Practical Certificate in International Conflict Prevention workshop offered in cooperation with the Canadian International Institute of Applied Negotiation (CIIAN). With the United Nations recent focus on conflict prevention, increased attention is now being paid to pre-emptive, low-risk, and cost-effective interventions that address emerging crises before they escalate into violence. In what is an evolving professional domain, this workshop will examine contemporary concepts and methods presently employed in conflict prevention work. Participants will be introduced to the topic of conflict prevention through a comprehensive framework that links Early Warning methodology to the various stages of the Early Response process. The program then identifies the most relevant skills and tools for conflict prevention and how they may be employed in a holistic, multi-sectoral, multilevel intervention. The workshop demonstrates practical ways to apply this methodology on the ground, locally, and at the wider international level.

Included in the workshop are examples of operational and structural prevention plus a review of recent research and lessons from a demonstration case in West Africa that highlight the relationship between security and development, and the role of local actors. Learning will occur through a combination of case studies, interactive exercises, and group discussion.

What you will learn:

  • Intro to different Early Warning (EW) methodologies
  • The difference between Structural and Operational conflict prevention
  • 4 stages for effective Early Response (ER)
  • The role of technology in EW and ER
  • The important role women play in conflict prevention
  • Best practices for designing EW-ER mechanisms
  • Design, Monitoring & Evaluation (DME) approaches and challenges
  • A model for a Whole-of-Problem Approach to Preventing Violent Conflict
