In the Media
Intermediate Training Module 1: Content Types
In the Media posts are used to highlight news stories, interviews, articles, and other media coverage published by external organizations.
Rather than copying content onto your website, an In the Media post allows you to create a summary and link visitors directly to the original source.
This content type is commonly used to showcase:
- News articles
- Interviews
- Media mentions
- Feature stories
- Research coverage
- External publications
By organizing media coverage as a dedicated content type, you can create searchable and filterable media listings across your website.
When to Use an In the Media Post
Use an In the Media post whenever you want to highlight coverage published by an external source.
Examples include:
- A newspaper article featuring your department
- A television interview with a faculty member
- Coverage of a research project
- A magazine article highlighting a university initiative
Rather than creating a full article on your website, create an In the Media post that links to the original source.
Creating an In the Media Post
To create an In the Media post:
- From the Dashboard, select In the Media > Add New.
- Enter a title for the story.
- Add the required media information.
- Save or publish the post.
Media Details
The In the Media content type includes several fields designed specifically for external media coverage.
Story Title
Use the title of the article or media story.
Example: Carleton Research Featured in National PublicationShow more lines
News Source
Enter the name of the publication, organization, or media outlet.
Examples:
- CBC News
- Ottawa Citizen
- Globe and Mail
- Maclean’s
Publication Date
Specify the date the story was originally published. Displaying publication dates helps visitors understand the timing and relevance of media coverage.
Article URL
Provide a link to the original story. Visitors who select the listing will be directed to the external source.
Tip: Always verify that links work correctly before publishing.
Categorization
In the Media posts can typically be associated with categories such as:
- Faculty Members
- Departments
- Research Areas
- Topics
These relationships make it easier to organize media coverage and create filtered listings across your website.
For example, a faculty profile page could automatically display media stories associated with that individual.
Featured Images
A featured image can be added to represent the story.
Featured images are commonly displayed in:
- Media listings
- Card layouts
- Featured content sections
To add a featured image:
- Locate the Featured Image section.
- Select Set Featured Image.
- Upload or choose an image from the Media Library.
Recommended image size: 600 × 400 pixels
Choose an image that supports the content and displays well in listing layouts.
Displaying Media Coverage
In the Media posts are most commonly displayed through listings and cards.
A listing might display:
- Story title
- Publication name
- Date
- Featured image
- Link to the original source
This allows departments and faculties to maintain a centralized collection of media coverage.
You’ll learn more about creating listings in Module 3: Listings & Cards.
