Ahmad Al-Qadi
Legislative Assistant
Degrees: | Bachelor of Arts with Major in English, Carleton University 2021 |
After graduating from Carleton, I began working as an Assistant Advocacy Officer in the National Council of Canadian Muslims, a non-profit organization dedicated to combating Islamophobia, hate, and discrimination across Canada. My primary responsibilities at the NCCM included meeting with Members of Parliament to advocate for recommendations. Since then, I have been working as a Legislative Assistant in the House of Commons to MP Sameer Zuberi.
My work in the advocacy sector as it related to my degree included research on anti-hate policy, drafting briefing material and communication documents on anti-hate. Part of my role as a Legislative Assistant centers around research on issues related to foreign affairs and international human rights. It also includes any topics that may be relevant to my office such as legislations, motions, and recommendations.
Whether it be through advocacy or in the political domain, I am incredibly fortunate to have a career that centers around improving the lives of others and upholding social justice domestically and abroad.
How has your Carleton English degree informed your professional and/or creative path?
I sometimes look back at all the reading, writing, and research that were assigned during my studies and I realize how much these assignments supported me in my work today. My English degree has provided me with the skill of being able to handle a high volume of research under time-sensitive deadlines. It has also developed my skills in critical thinking and communication, whether it be through writing or presentations. Holistically, I have recognized that my degree has allowed me to excel in any field of work that I have been involved in through its emphasis on critical thinking and creativity.
Why Carleton? What specific experiences or opportunities did you benefit from while studying English at Carleton?
In my opinion, the single most valuable aspect about studying English at Carleton was the incredible faculty. Some of my greatest teachers were Carleton University professors because they really knew how to challenge students to be their utmost best, but at the same time offered an incredible support system. There is just a very obvious passion for teaching that is so deeply embedded in the culture of the English Department that gives students an opportunity to realize their full potential.
