M.A. English ’14
Matt served as a sea-going naval officer from 2002-2010 and spent 2010-2011 in Afghanistan. Coming home, he attended Carleton University where he was the editor of In/Words. Encouragement from his professors and fellow students inspired his creative life: he published prose, poetry and began to perform his work live.
After graduation, Matt spent the fall planning a mixed land-sea exercise for several hundred sailors. Shortly thereafter, he was hired as the Artistic Director for VERSeFest 2014. After that, he participated in the Nijmegen March – a grueling four-day, 160km rucksack march through the Netherlands: his final military duty before retiring.
Suddenly free to travel, Matt moved to Nicaragua with his partner, where he tutored and wrote, before taking a position teaching at a university in Zhengjiang, China. After a year, he moved to Paris, where he works as the prose editor of the literary magazine Paris Lit Up, runs a writing workshop at the iconic Shakespeare and Company and teaches at the French War College. He has recently written a book about drones.
