The creative writing courses at Carleton have been an incredible step towards my ability to present myself authentically, beyond simply on the page. I’m honoured to have had the opportunity to develop myself as a leader among my peers under the skilled guidance of the workshop professors. These professors have cultivated an atmosphere of respect and collaboration for all their students, allowing us to feel completely at ease with the work and feedback shared around. My trepidation at exposing work that has been intensely personal to me has flourished into a love for what my words can reveal to others, both as works of fiction and in the feedback I can provide, leading me to start my own writers’ circle at Carleton to continue building on the literary community. I can only hope that my first publication in the school’s new literary magazine, the Sumac, will be the first of many great things to come, a step I would have never imagined taking without the development opportunities that Carleton’s creative writing courses have provided.
