Tracy Champagne completed Teachers’ College and then met a recruiter from Protocol Teachers who convinced her to teach her first year in England. This was a fantastic year of travel, learning, and adventure, and Tracy had so much fun! Upon returning to Canada, she moved back to her hometown of Cornwall and began teaching for the UCDSB. This year marks her 21st year of service, and she has had a great career thus far. Tracy has taught various subjects throughout her career, including English, History, Geography, Drama, Art, Music, Math, and Science. However, teaching English is her favorite subject due to its diversity and numerous possibilities for fun and media literacy. Tracy’s degree and her wonderful professors at Carleton prepared her for her career and set her up for success. Her goal as a teacher is to educate her students how to think critically and question their surroundings.
How has your Carleton English degree informed your professional and/or creative path?
As an English teacher, my education at Carleton was invaluable. I learned so much and was able to walk away with all sorts of tools that I use daily in teaching. I learned so much about researching and being able to find what you need. Modern technology has helped immensely. To put it into perspective, the Internet was barely a thing when I was in university (I remember it being just a DOS line without pictures). My professors helped us to navigate information and taught us how to dissect the media and the literary texts we were reading.
