The devastating earthquake that hit Turkey, Syria, and neighboring regions on February 6, 2023, has struck some of the most vulnerable people in the world. Over 24,000 people have lost their lives, many are injured, thousands are still trapped under the rubble, and efforts continue to reach those trapped under rubble. Of course, many of us will want to support recovery and rebuilding.

For oppressed communities such as Kurds, Alevis, Armenians, Assyrians, and Jews in the region, this earthquake lands within an existing context of devastation from war, displacement, and spent resources. In line with its long-standing genocidal policies, the Turkish state is actively preventing Kurdish and Alevi (Alawite) communities from accessing and enacting necessary support, especially in the Turkish-occupied areas of Syria. We must support grassroots groups that have the capacity and know-how to effectively reach the peoples of the region now.

Financial contributions: Please consider donating to the Kurdistan Red Crescent, a trusted organization supporting both Kurdish regions in Turkey and Syria, at the following link:  https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=ST5BWWFB7FPGS Another reliable local organisation is the Diyarbakir Bar Association – see attached for information about making a direct bank deposit.
