French Language Placement Test

If you decide to take a French course at Carleton (whether you are majoring in French or not), you will initially take our online French Language Placement Test, which will establish your level of French. The test is mandatory for everyone (even if you have no prior knowledge of French). Please note that you can only take this test once. Be as accurate as possible while filling out the test. The French language placement test is intended for Carleton students who register for a French course at Carleton for the first time.

What is in the Test?

The French Placement is a set of procedures used to ensure that you will register in the appropriate level of language course. The first step is the self-assessment questionnaire, which you fill out as accurately and honestly as possible. The second step is a series of grammar exercises of increasing difficulty. We ask that you complete this step to the best of your ability. Your test score will determine which courses you are eligible to register for through Carleton Central.

In-person Verification of Your Proficiency

Your oral proficiency will be assessed during the first week of classes and based on your results, you will either stay in the course determined by the online placement test or the instructor will recommend another course.

If you have already taken and passed a French course at Carleton, then you should enroll in the next course via Carleton Central.
